Newly Discovered Virus Linked to Deadly Kidney Disease in Cats

A newly discovered virus may be one of the causes of a potentially fatal kidney disease in pet cats.

Tubulointerstitial nephritis is a disease that inflames the spaces between the kidney tubules, the tubes that carry fluid for filtration inside the organ. Many factors can cause tubulointerstitial nephritis in humans, from infections to autoimmune disorders to certain medications. But in cats, the cause is rarely known.

Now, researchers in Hong Kong believe they've found at least one culprit: a new virus related to measles and mumps dubbed feline morbillivirus. A dog version of this virus causes distemper, which manifests as vomiting, diarrhea, coughing and deadly neurological symptoms.

"All dogs are vaccinated against the canine distemper virus, because the dog morbillivirus can cause very severe disease in dogs with fever, pneumonia, brain infection, immunosuppression and rash," study researcher Kwok-Yung Yuen told LiveScience. "Despite the close relationship between dog, cat and human, no morbillivirus is found in cats yet. And one of top causes of death in cases due to nephritis leading to kidney failure is quite unknown." [10 Deadly Diseases That Hopped Across Species]

Yuen and his colleagues went looking for this elusive cat morbillivirus, figuring that if viruses in this family could infect dogs and humans, they'd likely show up in cats. They were right. Of 457 stray cats from Hong Kong and mainland China tested, 12.3 percent (56 individuals) carried the virus. A total of 27.8 percent had antibodies to the virus, meaning they had been infected at some point in their lives.

The researchers then conducted autopsies and post-mortem exams on 27 deceased stray cats. They found tubulointerstitial nephritis in seven of the 12 stray cats with evidence of feline morbillivirus infection. Of the 15 uninfected cats, only two had kidney damage.
The virus should not pose a threat to human health, Yuen said, but the findings could be important for cats no just in Hong Kong but also the United Kingdom and the United States. Currently, there is no good prevention or treatment for feline tubulointerstitial nephritis, he said. That's bad news for the 22 percent of Hong Kong pet owners who keep cats, and for the estimated 75 million housecats in America.
"We are now working [to learn] the relative risk of kidney involvement in those cats infected and testing for antiviral agents," Yuen said. "We are trying to set up animal models for vaccine studies."
The research appears today (March 19) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

March 1 Day CFA Phx Cat Show

Well we had a lovely show. Nigel made3 Champion points finals - we believe gaining enough point to give him 92 towards his grand (he needs 200 total). And our little dare devil kitten - Raven came out her first time and made 2  Allbreed Kitten finals. And not to be out done Zima made 6 out of 6 Premiership finals - we believe he only needs an additional 2 points to Grand! Woo Hoo! a Very Good Day!   These lovely people were here taking video - and at the 37 second mark is our Zima with his owner Debra!

In Phoenix, Superstition Cat Fanciers presented the St. Catty’s Day Cat Show. In the show, 175 CFA pedigreed cats and kittens competed for end of season awards.

We Are "Expecting" & Showing

Well our cats are!  Kender Siberians is so pleased - we have 2 litters due later this week or early next week. SO keep checking back for baby posts!

Also - we are traveling to a 1 day CFA show this weekend in NM. Taking Prada & Nigel - wish us well. And Zima makes his "big boy" adult debut in the premiership class.  Wish us Luck!

Just Some Random Pictures

Here are just some random pictures of the kitties around the house. Top is CFA Grand Bella - relaxing./resting on her laurels. She turns 4 this year.

 And here is our new little (well not really little) girl. She is just 6 months old and quite the lovable charmer.
And immediately below is our pretty silver & white girl - Tribble , can hardly believe she is a year old already. And just was bred to our big handsome cream mac & white boy - so we look forward to some very flashy high white babies soon!

And here is Mr Malfoy All of 5 months old a really hefty sturdy boy - available to a breeding home, out of our big silver classic import Eddy & our Bella (pictured at top)

And immediately below is Prada - who now has 54 points towards her CFA grand at the tender age of 9 months. Look for her to continue her show career for a while yet.

And this pretty red silver classic boy is Jerry Lee. Neutered and still looking for his perfect forever home. Going on just 7 months He is a love bug and a 1/2 loves the dogs, loves the kids, loves the cats. 

And below is miss cool as can be  Folly. Lovely girl, moderate of size, very typey with a beautiful head. She just turned a year old and we are trying to decide if we should breed her or let her go - would make a fantastic addition to any breeding program.  Out of our super sweet and typey brown ticked tabby boy Bill and our very own CFA Grand Tonks.

Time Flew By

WOW, time really flies these days - I can't believe it has been almost 2 months since my lost post!  Well Okay - we have a few things of note going on.  First our Zima mad an impressive showing in the Phx 1 day in January - pulling 4 out of 6 finals in the kitten rings, including a BEST KITTEN! Woo Hoo! He has since aged out and will be looking forward to the Premier classes soon!   Prada & Nigel have both gotten off to a nice start towards their grands w/ Prada making 54 points in her first show.  We are loving showing these 2. 

And for spring we are expecting a few litters - so watch for the announcements. Inclduing Giddeon's first litter bred to our Zoya (mother to CFA grand's Bella & Tonks) . We have a possible Bill litter coming up , and a Kotey litter due next month! So watch for update's soon.
